Big thank you to Larry Yu for taking these pictures.
1. Architecture- Different styles of buildings, floors, etc. can be used as fashion inspiration. For example, a run down building with graffiti writing and broke
n windows probably developed the grunge style. Grunge incorporates a lot bold items, with rips, holes, Doc Martens- kind of style. These all follow the same pattern of being not exactly the classy type, and appear as very daring. In a way, the graffiti covered wall, is run-down and incomplete, worn-out, just like the fashion. Among the other orderly buildings, this building seems to stand out in a positive, interesting, and artistic way. Likewise, the same ideology can be incorporated into any type of architecture.
2. Nature- A lot of designers are inspired by nature and its stunning natural beauty. This one is rather obvious, because so many patterns and designs incorporate nature.
From florals to animal prints, items with these prints are actually quite popular. When seeing something in nature that catches your eye, be sure to think about how it would go into a piece of clothing or an accessory.
3. Music- Music greatly inspires fashion, as each style of music comes with a style of fashion. For example, Coachella and other similar music festivals have created a music festival trend. The music festival usually takes place at a large grassy field, with the sun shining, the nature aspect that becomes incorporated into the style. The music generally gives off this breezy, good vibes feel and the festival itself is pretty crazy and wild. These all factor into the result of a boho, indie, hippie style. Similarly, the genres of rap and hip hop are generally associated with a grungy street style. If you really think about it, each genre of music can be identified by a style of fashion as well.
I spent the afternoon in a local downtown area with my friend Julia. We had a spontaneous photoshoot, and of course some ice cream. Since it was such a casual day, I just paired a black button down with easy jeans from American Apparel. It was such a comfortable outfit, especially for a quick hangout with a friend. Of course, I happened to wear my go-to shoes- Adidas Superstar IIs.

#GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso: Sophia Amoruso is the founder and owner of Nasty Gal, an amazing store that is for “girls who just want to get dressed for themselves and not for anyone else”. This books talks about how she started off as a college dropout who was stealing from stores and train hopping, to this phenomenal, successful business woman she is today. The book really inspired me, being that Sophia kept pursuing what she loved and kept going, regardless of failure. This book should be read by everyone, regardless of whether or not you’re into fashion, as it truly inspires me to become a girl boss like her.
How to be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style, and Bad Habits by Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan, Caroline De Maigret, and Sophie Mas: This book was written by a group of Parisian friends, hence the title and discusses style, beauty, attitude, and everything a girl needs to be Parisian (aka a badass with killer style). It includes pages like, “What you won’t find in her closet” and “Not your most glorious moments”, as well as “How to make him think you have a lover”. Needless to say, this book is amazing.
The Little Dictionary of Fashion by Christian Dior: This book was written by Christian Dior- amazing French designer who of course created Dior. This is such a classic book that covers everything from collars to the way you walk to the color brown. Just like a most students who take English or any other language need a dictionary, everyone who speaks fashion needs this book.
It by Alexa Chung: This book was written by Alexa Chung- another girl boss. The illustrations, photographers, and the little snippets of fashion advice and experiences, just come together as such a book of art, that everyone must have.
In Vogue: An Illustrated History of the World’s Most Famous Fashion Magazine by Alberto Oliva, Norberto Angeletti, and Anna Wintour: I think the title basically sums up this book. Vogue is one of the most influential magazines in history. This book showcases it, with the covers of Vogue from all the way from the beginning of the magazine, and discusses topics like the evolution of style. This is another classic and very interesting read, especially for fashion lovers like me.
The Look:
Top // Topshop
Denim // Hollister
Shoes // Adidas
Necklace // Forever 21
I titled this outfit “vintage casual”, because the furry, cropped sweater, shredded denim, Adidas Superstar IIs, and coin necklace gave off a rustic 90s feel in the form of a casual, everyday outfit.
